Community Service

Community service challenges students to engage in meaningful, authentic learning experiences. This supports the vision of the Upper Arlington Schools — uniquely accomplished students prepared to serve, lead and succeed.

Each year, Jones Middle School students are required to complete 2 to 4 hours of community service. Grade-level counselors meet with students to discuss how to log their hours and general guidelines for selecting service opportunities. They encourage students to align their interests and skills in ways that support the broader community.

Community service is voluntary work completed in order to support another person, a group of people, or an organization. It involves work that benefits the broader community, including the middle school community.

Examples of community service:

  • Working at a school event such as Windermere KidFest or Tremont Fall Festival
  • Helping with school initiatives like tutoring a peer, organizing drives, or contributing to clubs
  • Volunteering at a community event such as the Labor Day Arts Festival or the Columbus Marathon
  • Helping in the neighborhood by raking leaves or walking pets for elderly neighbors
  • Volunteering with an organization such as the Humane Society, the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, or the Upper Arlington Public Library
  • Sharing skills to help others, like teaching tech skills to seniors or giving lessons to younger kids

Service Hour Specifics

  • 6th Grade: 2 hours logged and verified in Maia Learning

  • 7th Grade: 3 hours logged and verified in Maia Learning

  • 8th Grade: 4 hours logged and verified in Maia Learning

  • We highly encourage students to engage in even more community service. There will be opportunities within each building to provide service to the school community, and students should continue to log these hours.

    • Any 8th-grade student who performs 50+ hours of logged and verified service during their three years of middle school will be recognized at the 8th-grade celebration/promotion ceremony in May.

    • All students who meet the minimum service hour requirement will be recognized at the end of the year.

  • All service hours must be completed between the first day of summer break and May 1 of the current school year.
