WIndermere Weekly Parent Update

Sunday, May 13, 2018

A very Happy Mother’s Day to all of the AMAZING moms out there.  I hope your children showered you with good wishes to let YOU know how important you are in the family!  To our dads, too, I wish you the best day, as well! I know we aren’t in school during Father’s Day. Enjoy the day(s)!

On behalf of the Windermere staff, I want to THANK all of our parents for the kindness and thoughtful acts that have been shared with us this week, during teacher appreciation week.  Wow. We definitely feel loved and appreciated! As always, you go above and beyond to let us know how much you care! THANK YOU again and again. We know we couldn’t do what we do without your support.

Food Allergy Awareness Week:

Food Allergy Awareness Week is May 13-19th.  Here at Windermere, our students have been working hard to highlight food allergies and communicate to all students how we can all keep our classrooms, friends and environments as safe as possible for students with food allergies.

We have a fun opportunity for your child to get creative while learning about food allergies and raising awareness!

We would like to invite your child to submit a written fact and/or hand-drawn picture relating to food allergies on an 8X11 piece of paper.  The fact can be anything related to food allergies.  You can find facts on sites such as  We will display all entries on a large poster in the nurse’s office and overflow out into the mall hallway!

Other things happening at Windermere next week...

For Food Allergy Awareness Week at Windermere next week:

  • Daily announcements will be made by students in the Food Allergy Allies Group educating students about Food Allergies and how they can be an ally.

  • Students will wear Teal on Friday, May 18th, to support students with Food Allergies and raise awareness.

  • Members of the Food Allergy Allies group are working on posters to raise awareness about the week to display throughout the school.

  • Students will be handing teal papers out to teachers who will then recognize students who have demonstrated in some way that they are a “Food Allergy Ally”

  • Students in the Food Allergy Allies group are busy working on a informative display that will reward peers who stop by to look with a small sticker.

Did you know?

  • For the past several years, the Empire State Building has been lit teal on the first day of Food Allergy Awareness Week?  You can see a picture here:

  • Food allergies affect close to 6 million children?  Approximately 2 in every classroom in America.

  • Roughly ⅓ of students with food allergies report they have been bullied specifically because of their allergies.

  • A reaction to food can range from a mild response (such as an itchy mouth) to anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially deadly reaction.

  • Every 3 minutes, a food allergy reactions send someone to the emergency room in the U.S.

Lastly, the local Tri-Village magazine this month features UA resident and Greensview mom, Sonya North, whose own experience with her children’s food allergies prompted her to develop the website , a simple webtool that allows parents and teachers to create a quick, online and shareable list of safe snacks.  Users enter a list name, click off the allergies they want to avoid, enter their email, and a list of safe snacks is created.  Room parents - this is what you have been waiting for!  You can read more about Sonya and her SnackRoots website at
